Ideas Magazine Trunk Show - Ticket Giveaway

It’s almost time for the first Ideas trunk show.
Go and visit them at Simondium Country Lodge on 13 and 14 July, where you’ll feel as if you’re walking through the pages of the magazine. Not only are the Ideas team members going to combine all their collective creativity to bring the magazine to life for a weekend, they are also going to ensure that you can buy all your favourite projects featured in the magazine.
The creative entrepreneurs whose work you’ve seen and stories you’ve read month after month on the pages of the Ideas Mag will be taking part too; the craft equipment that you struggle to find will be on sale, as well as the gorgeous items that you inquire about; and you’ll be able to meet the team members and ask them your questions. When your feet are tired and you’re feeling hungry, enjoy a bite to eat in the Lodge’s vintage dining room or sip on a glass of wine in the wine lounge.
Or why not make a weekend of it and combine your visit to the trunk show with the Bastille festivities in Franschhoek?

Shutter Love

Whether used inside or on the exterior of a home, I really love the look of shutters. In addition to looking good, they are both practical and versatile. They can be a great alternative to curtains, can be used as a security measure, work well as room dividers, can be used as headboards, to conceal unsightly elements or purely as wall decorations. Having said that, however, I really dislike those fake shutters that are nailed on next to the windows outside a house, pretending to be the real thing!

Calming Spaces

We are holidaying in Plettenberg Bay with the boys at the moment. So relaxing! I hope you appreciate the effort I am going to, to put together a blog post for you. I have forced myself to come to my favourite French coffee shop, Le Fournil, to have a latte and delicious almond croissant and take advantage of their free WiFi!

One of my favourite things about going on holiday is while you are driving to your destination, that feeling of all the stresses of everyday living slowly leaving your body. I can literally feel my shoulder muscles unclenching and that relaxing feeling slowly making it's way down the rest of my body. (Do you know what I'm talking about! If you don't - you need a holiday!!) Unless you are one of those lucky people who feels permanently relaxed.

The selection of pictures I'm showing you today give me that same calm, relaxed feeling I get when going on holiday. No jarring colours, very little accessorising, nothing to assault the senses, just serene and peaceful.

No more commentary .... that would require more effort than I'm really feeling up to right now, plus I have that almond croissant to tuck into! Enjoy!

Divine in the Desert

This beautiful home by Oz Architects is set in the Arizona desert in the United States. There are so many elements that really appeal to me, but the most appealing is that the house looks as though it would be a lovely cool and inviting space in which to take refuge from the hot desert days. It also blends so perfectly into its desert environment ... if the lights weren't on, you would hardly notice it.

I can relate to this environment as I grew up in a semi-desert area of South Africa called the Karoo. It has a very unique beauty and a home like this would have been perfect. My parents home was very different to this... a Cape Dutch style house full of Persian carpets and dark wood English antique furniture. It was beautiful, but perhaps not the best fit for the environment. The photo below is of the Karoo in South Africa.... very similar to the desert setting above.

..... and this is my childhood home.... see what I mean.

But... I digress .... back to the Arizona home...I love the muted colour scheme, the spaciousness, the beautiful rustic ceiling beams, the flagstone floors, I could go on and on.

The plants look like they are all water-wise choices and there is no lawn to be seen - perfect for a desert setting.

One of the reasons why I find this home so appealing is because, as much as it suits its Arizona setting, it would look equally at home in the Provincal countryside and I'm a complete sucker for anything French.

I wonder how you feel about living in the desert? I think I could if it was in a home like this.

 Till next time
